As a result of the 2010 passing of the Harmonized Sales Tax in Ontario, all legal fees and some disbursements are subject to the 13% HST.

Contingency Rates

A contingency fee is where the paralegal firm is paid for their services if and only if the plaintiff wins or there is a settlement. How much is a contingency fee? That depends. Normally, it is a percentage of the winnings. This percentage is determined on a case-by-case basis and considers the following factors:

  • the complexity of the case
  • the expense and risk of pursing the case
  • the likelihood of success
  • the amount of the expected recovery

Hourly and Flat Fee Rates

    • $ 87.50 per hour
    • 0.69 per km charge also applies
  • Appearances (pre-trial)
    • $ 400.00 flat rate

        • Adjournments
        • Garnishee Trials
        • Assessment of Damages
        • Settlement Conferences
  • Trials
    • $ 1,050.00 per day
  • Evening, Weekend and Holiday rates
    • $350.00 per hour

Consultations

A consultation will give you the opportunity to have your case evaluated by a licensed paralegal. You should come to this first meeting with key documents, paper, pen and a list of questions. Our consultation fee is $ 175.00 plus HST for sixty minutes and is payable in advance.

Process Serving

  • 3 attempts
    • $95.00
  • Mileage (outside city limits)
    • $0.69 per km

The cost of disbursements, expenses incurred on behalf of the client(i.e. postage, copies, process serving, court filing, etc.) will be in addition to fees and rates.

  1. The above fees do NOT include disbursements (i.e. Board fees, Court fees, Witness fees, etc.) or communications, billed at 1/10th of an hour increments.
  2. HST will be added to the above fees.
  3. Review of documents not prepared by us are subject to fees in accordance with our hourly rate, billed at 1/10th of an hour increments.

Sterling Paralegal


Sterling Paralegal is owned and operated by Thomas Schoenleber, Licensed Paralegal. Mr. Schoenleber has a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario and has been practicing as a litigation paralegal since 1993.

Loryn Lux, Licenced Paralegal, holds H.B.A. and M.B.A. degrees. Ms. Lux has been working as a paralegal since 2010, and in 2013 joined Sterling Paralegal as the managing partner.
